The Knot Garden
The Knot Garden is the most formal area of Kingsbrae Garden – each of the four beds is laid out symmetrically with a different Celtic knot in varying colours of foliage, enclosed by boxwood. All is carefully trimmed to a consistent height; the idea is to make nature conform to our own ornamental design, rather than letting it take its own natural scope. Knot gardens (parterres) were popular in the 15th and 16th centuries in Italy and France and fashionable in Britain from Tudor times.
