Gravel Garden
The Earth is running out of groundwater. 21 of the world’s 37 largest aquifers have passed their sustainability tipping points, meaning they are losing more water than is being replaced. The Gravel Garden at Kingsbrae demonstrates that gardens can still be planted, and can grow to become beautiful and successful without an abundant need of water. The Gravel Garden has never been watered with anything but rain and mist from the sky. The plants selected for this area are drought tolerant and the gravel acts as an insulating mulch keeping in the moisture. Usually gravel gardens are best suited for a Mediterranean climate, but Kingsbrae demonstrates that such gardens can be successful even in a much harsher climate.
